After more than ten years of campaigning by local Labour Councillors in Tooting Graveney to find a space for a play park in the Graveney area of Tooting, the Mellison Road Pocket Park opened yesterday.
Cllr Andy Gibbons said: ‘Ten years ago, I started working with my colleague Alaina MacDonald on finding a space in Graveney ward for play. We looked at many options but all were turned down by Wandsworth Council. Eventually, with the help of the local community, we came up with a plan and consulted residents. Once it got the go-ahead it was delayed by the pandemic – but I’m delighted that now it’s finally ready to open.’
Cllr Kate Forbes said: ‘This is a much needed green space. Graveney is one of the most deprived wards in the country when it comes to play space, so this is a fantastic day for our community.’
Cllr Kemi Akinola said: ‘It’s great to see this opening at the start of the new school year so pupils from Sellincourt Primary School can use it before and after school.’
