Welcoming the extension of the ULEZ today to the North and South Circulars, Labour’s London Assembly Environment Spokesperson, Leonie Cooper AM, said:
“From today, millions of Londoners will be able to breathe cleaner. This is one of the biggest public health interventions we have seen in the capital and air pollution is one of the most significant social justice issues we face right now.
“This extension will build upon the huge success of the Central London ULEZ, clamping down on harmful roadside emissions, saving our NHS billions over the coming decades and helping prevent a range of serious diseases caused by long-term exposure to toxic air.
“I hope the Government uses this week’s Spending Review and the upcoming UN COP26 Conference to empower cities like London to go even further to improve their air quality.
“We need both the introduction of a new Clean Air Act and an expansion of the Clean Air Fund, to boost City Hall’s existing vehicle scrappage schemes, as well as q multi-year funding deal for TfL so it can invest in green transport infrastructure projects.”
